This week, we reported about a Vigilante Hacker, who protected users by installing malware on their Wi-Fi routers, forcing them to use a secure password.
NETGEAR was first to introduce the world’s fastest wireless router. That’s just the latest evolution of a legacy of innovative wireless routers and modem routers. More homes now have multiple devices requiring strong, steady WiFi signals. NETGEAR offers the best range of options to meet every type of home networking need. Now, to begin the process of knowing your NetGear router’s IP address, you first have to log into the WiFi router. Of course, things do get a bit more complex later on. But the reason why you need to find out more information about the IP address of your WiFi router is that without it you cannot access it on a given web browser.

- Netgear, Linksys and many other Wireless Routers have a backdoor The French hacker Eloi Vanderbeken discovered the presence of a backdoor in principal models of routers including Netgear, Linksys and Cisco.
- Netgear has issued a fix for 18 out of 31 vulnerable routers The flaw was exposed by cyber-security firm Trustwave Devices with remote management enabled vulnerable to hack.
Now within few days, a security researcher has discovered a serious vulnerability in Netgear routers that has been publicly exploited by hackers.
The critical flaw could allow hackers to bypass authentication mechanism and change the Domain Name System (DNS) settings of victims' routers to the malicious IP address. [Exploit Code]
A security researcher, named Joe Giron, gave the details of his experience to BBC, saying that he noticed some anonymous activities in his machine and on investigating he learned that:
The admin settings on his personal router have been modified on 28 September.
Specifically, Domain Name System (DNS) settings on his router were changed to a suspicious IP address.

As an outcome of which the hacked router was sending web browsing data to a malicious Internet address.
'Normally I set mine to Google's [IP address], and it was not that, it was something else,' Giron said. 'For two or three days all my DNS traffic was being sent over to them.'

Giron contacted Netgear about the serious issue, to which they replied that the vulnerability discovered their products is 'serious,' but 'affects fewer than 5,000 devices.'
Further, Giron switched off his router to avoid anymore mishappenings.
Is it Serious Flaw..?
In another statement, Jonathan Wu, senior director of product management at Netgear said, 'Is it serious? Yes, it definitely is.'
Currently, any patch is not available for the firmware on the affected devices. However, Netgear assures its users that the company will release a patch by October 14 to fix the issue.
Therefore, we would suggest all the Netgear router's users not to use their devices, until the vulnerability is patched; as you might be one of those 5000.

An exploit that has taken the 'protected' out of Wi-Fi Protected Access II (WPA2) means that your wireless network is likely not as safe as you once thought. What security researcher Mathy Vanhoef is calling 'KRACK' attacks the handshake portion of the WPA2 protocol. Mobile Nations Senior Editor Jerry Hildenbrand put together a comprehensive guide on exactly how the exploit works and how you can protect yourself, also mentioning some information on patches containing a fix. To help you stay on top of which vendors are patching the vulnerability, we rounded them up here.
Router vendors that have issued KRACK patches
As mentioned in Hildenbrand's article, the best way to protect yourself from this exploit is to not use Wi-Fi at all until a proper fix has been proven. CERT has released notes on the KRACK problem, including a list of vendors whose equipment is vulnerable.
